Levels of cognition

Cognitive Therapy
Was developed int he 1960's by Aaron Beck and advanced by his daughter Judith Beck in the 1980's.
It is a short term structured approach that identifies and modifies negative thoughts that affect behavior. Judith summarized that all negative behaviors originated from dysfunctional thinking processes. Beck believed that this stemmed from childhood experiences and that accurate diagnosis was key in understanding the relationships between thoughts, emotions and feelings. The levels of cognition pictured to the level demonstrate the loop and interconnectedness between the situation, the thoughts, beliefs, emotions and behaviors.
Treatment goals include the client identifying and changing the dysfunctional through process - becoming aware of how thoughts affect feelings and behaviors. Therapists facilitate the understanding - they do not play active leaders. |
